A Change in Leadership

The Committee on Foreign Affairs saw a change to its leadership team as a new Chairman and Deputy were appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on June 11, 2024. He stated that this was done in order to bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to their work, advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and strengthening international relations.

Key Activities Under the New Leadership

  1. Maiden Familiarization Meeting (June 27, 2024)
    Hon. Oluwole Oke convened the first meeting with his committee members to outline his vision and set the agenda for their collaborative efforts. This meeting set the tone for a productive tenure focused on strategic diplomacy and effective oversight.
  2. Meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs (July 2, 2024)
    The Committee held a crucial meeting with the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs and key members of his management team. Discussions centered on current foreign policy challenges and opportunities, with an emphasis on fostering stronger bilateral and multilateral relations.
  3. House of Representatives Open Week (July 3-5, 2024)
    During the House of Representatives Open Week, the Committee showcased its activities and achievements on July 4, 2024. This event provided an excellent platform to engage with the public and highlight the Committee’s role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy.
  4. Courtesy/Oversight Visits (July 10, 2024)
    The Committee conducted oversight visits to the Directorate of Technical Aids Corps (DTAC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  5. Courtesy/Oversight Visits (July 15, 2024)
    Further oversight visits were made to the National Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and the Foreign Service Academy.

These visits underscored the Committee’s commitment to enhancing the capacity and effectiveness of Nigeria’s diplomatic institutions. The Committee assessed the issues plaguing these MDAs with a goal to resolving them to enhance their operation.
